Theme: Living for Jesus
Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 "Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you. Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others."
Reflection:
Words spoken out of anger, frustration, or extreme emotion have a tendency to wound us despite the intent. this passage shifts our perspective. In moments like these, God calls us to practice discernment, letting harmful words pass by without becoming rooted within us. This does not mean ignoring gentle correction or conviction. It does mean finding your identity in God rather than in the opinions of others. God also encourages us to offer forgiveness, remembering that we are not innocent. We, too, have spoken wrongly about others without thinking of the repercussions. When we recognize our own faulty tongue, we can begin to humbly lean on the Lord for grace. Our identity in Christ is much greater than the harshness of anyone's tongue.
Questions to Consider:
How can you determine the difference between correction and criticism? How can you be more mindful of how you speak to others?
Application:
During a conversation with a close friend, observe how you speak to them. Is your tongue wicked or does it align with the values you claim to believe? Think about how your speech can further reflect God's character in every situation.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Lord, we thank You for humbling us with this verse today. You have reminded us that when we judge others for their sinful actions, we are being hypocritical. Lord, we need Your grace. Give us the wisdom to discern what speech is from You and the words that are bringing us down. Remind us that our identity is in You, not the words of others. Help us to let go of harmful speech without letting it affect our confidence in Your plan, Lord.
