6/20 Repentance

Theme: Living for Jesus

Luke 15:7 “‘Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

Reflection:

In this verse, Jesus truly highlights the importance of repentance of our sins. You may be wondering, why is this so important if God already knows my heart and my faults? Repentance builds our relationship with God because it opens a path of honesty and humility, eliminating any shame we have before the Lord. Repentance also reveals a true dependence on the Lord. It shows that we have humbled ourselves, admitted our shortcomings, and sought transformation of our hearts from the Lord. If we believe that we are righteous with no need for repentance, we are essentially claiming that we do not need God. This prideful perspective separates us from the Lord as it causes us to rely on our own strength, turning away from His helping hand.

In Timothy 1:15 the Apostle Paul, a devout follower of Christ, claims that he is the worst sinner of us all. His humility and acknowledgement of his need for God’s grace is something to be imitated. If Paul needs God’s grace, we all desperately need the Lord to heal us through repentance and transformation.

Questions to Consider:

Are you too ashamed of your sinful nature to bring your sin to the Lord? Do you recognize your true need for God’s grace that comes from Jesus’ crucifixion? How can we fully accept the idea that what Jesus did for us provides the gift of grace that covers all of our shortcomings, failures, and sin?

Application:

Assume the perspective of Paul for a few minutes. Look back on the past week of your life and repent for each time where you either reflected Christ poorly or did not regard Him at all. Do not be ashamed to bring these moments to the Lord for His grace is sufficient for all of us. After you have repented for these moments, jot down a few ways you can change these behaviors to glorify God.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your grace that covers all of our sin despite how undeserving we are. Lord, we recognize our need for You. We need Your grace, mercy, and love. We pray that as the weeks continue to unfold, we can come to You in prayer with open, honest hearts full of repentance. Lord, we are the worst of sinners and desperately need You. Thank You for sending Your son to die for us so that we may be forgiven of our shortcomings. You are so good to us God. All of this is in Your holy name, Amen.
