3/30 Soft in Speech

Theme: Living for Jesus

Proverbs 15:1 "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger"

Reflection:

In the heat of the moment, it is natural to respond quickly and with a harsh tone. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to live with a lowly spirit as Jesus did, expressing meekness and humility. Imitating these character traits orders us to take a breath and step away from heated conversations before responding. Instead, we should respond with kindness while holding firm to our beliefs. Additionally, nonbelievers are constantly watching our actions and observing our habits. This constant monitoring make it so much more important for us to reveal God's character through our actions and responses. Our disposition and ability to handle difficult situations reveals our faith louder than speaking of it does.

Questions to Consider:

When are you most likely to be caught off guard and respond harshly? How did this response make the other person feel? Did it escalate the situation?

Application:

Think about a specific situation from the questions above. Reflect on how the outcome would have been different if you stepped away for a moment to recollect your emotions.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your only son to us as an example of how we should live. As we strive to imitate His way of life, help us to maintain a calm, composed disposition in all situations. Lord, You are perfect and provide a flawless template for dealing with difficult situations. We thank You for giving us a larger purpose for dealing with others kindly. Please give us the humility to step away from heated conversations and return with a renewed mindset. All of this is in Your holy name, Amen.
