5/15 Worldly Freedom

Theme: Living for Jesus

2 Peter 2:19 “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.”

Reflection:

2 Peter reminds us that often times freedom can be misleading. The world tells us that freedom consists of following our hearts, trusting our gut, and doing what makes us happy. Yet, these same people are trapped by anxiety, depression, or insecurity. Although this worldly freedom seems enticing, it separates us from the only one who truly matters, our Father in Heaven. Sin, much like freedom, presents itself as something exciting and liberating, but over time it becomes a chain. What begins as a small compromise or toeing the boundary can slowly gain control over our thoughts and identity. Whatever rules our mind ends up taking the place of God in our lives.

When we fully accept Jesus in our hearts, He gives us freedom and belonging. Freedom from the chains of sin. Freedom from the lust, greed, pride, or envy that previously ruled our hearts. And most of all, freedom to boldly claim Him as our Lord and Savior.

Questions to Consider:

Where in your life are you controlled by thoughts and emotions rather than the Word of God? How has this pulled you away from God?

Application:

Seek someone who has been struggling with sin and temptation recently. Have a difficult conversation with them this week and talk about the freedom God gives us through His endless love. At the end of the conversation ask them how you can be a better spiritual leader.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the freedom that You have provided through Your love and sacrifice. Lord, we ask that you give us the wisdom to turn away from the temptation of worldly freedom. Help us to stand strong against the ways of this generation, living apart from those around us. We thank You for the light that You provide in the darkness. Help us to shine that light to those around us, offering help rather than judgement. We pray that we are courageous this week, boldly proclaiming Your name. All of this is in Your holy name, Amen.
