5/17 Contentment in Christ

Theme: Keeping Him at the Center

1 Timothy 6:6-8 "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that."

Reflection:

When we have God, we have all we need. Although this is easier said than done, it is the life we are called to live: one of contentment. In a world driven by consumerism, comparison, and instant gratification, it is easy to believe that satisfaction can be found in money, relationships, achievements, or social media. We often turn to these things for comfort, security, or identity, allowing them to slowly take the place of God in our hearts. Yet 1 Timothy reminds us that earthly things were never meant to fulfill us. Everything this world offers is temporary. We entered this world with nothing, and we will leave it with nothing. True fulfillment is not found in what we own or have achieved, but it is found in a relationship with Christ.

When our hearts are centered on serving the Lord, we begin to experience a deeper joy that material things can never provide. Even in seasons of hardships and loss, we can rest in the knowledge that God will be with us through every valley. Godliness accompanied by contentment shows us that no temporary losses or gains can change our foundation in Christ.

Questions to Consider:

If everything was stripped away from you (your life, career, family, significant other, etc.), would you be content with only having God? How can you get to a place where you are?

Application:

In intentional prayer, ask God for the courage and the strength to put your full reliance in Him. Ask Him to remove the things in your life that pull you away from Him, rather than bring you closer.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are faithful. Your goodness and Your love are enough for us. We do not need to indulge in the ways of the world because You have gifted us the bread of life. Lord, we ask that anything in our lives that does not honor and glorify You, be stripped from us. Your plan is so great, we place our complete trust in You. Help us to arrive at a place in our hearts where we would be okay with having You and nothing else. We love You. All of this is in Your holy name, Amen.
